palacinky

Ingredients: 2 cups water, 1.5 cups flour, bit of salt, one tablespoon of sugar, topping of your choice Prep Time: 10 minutes to make the dough, about 2 minutes per pancake for frying Few weeks ago I showed you how my grandma Pavka makes fancy fluffy apple pancakes. In this recipe I show you how my other grandma, Terka, makes pancakes. Her pancakes (or crepes, palacinky) are simple, easy and cheap to make. They require just a few ingredients and take just few minutes to prepare. And best of all, they are just as tasty. Start by combining 2 cups Read the Rest…

apple pancakes

Ingredients: 2 cups flour, 2 cups milk, 2 apples, 2 eggs, powdered sugar, salt, jam, oil (for frying) Prep Time: 20 minutes I prepare pancakes (palacinky) by simply mixing flour, eggs, milk and sugar. Although Slovakia is known for its kolache (koláče), elaborate sweet deserts found in cukráreň, the pastry shop, this type of a sweet is called krehké pečivo, meaning fragile baked good. It’s quite simple to make, however you’ll need baking molds. The form most commonly used is in the shape of a Read the Rest…

Chocolate Covered Bananas (Banány v Čokoláde)

chocolate covered bananas

Ingredients: bananas, chocolate, toppings One of my favorite candies in Slovakia are little banana-shaped yellow jello pieces covered in dark chocolate. They are made by a company named Orion, and are called (quite appropriately) “Bananas in Chocolate” (external link). I think they are also commonly known as “banánky” (little bananas). Well yesterday my friend Miroslava sent me a photo of her chocolate covered bananas, along with the recipe. Here it is: Melt chocolate (čokoláda) of your choice (baking chocolate or a chocolate bar) by placing it in a small pot, which you in turn place in a larger pot containing Read the Rest…
